Open School

Lead Designer: John Holmes
Architect of Record: Holst Architecture

While Owner and Partner at Holst, John Holmes led the design of Open School, a purpose-built high school in Portland’s Rockwood neighborhood created to better serve students in outer East Portland. Developed alongside the Rockwood Boys & Girls Club and New Avenues for Youth Opportunity Center, the project anchors a growing network of youth-focused community resources, providing a safe, inspiring environment for learning, mentorship, and connection.

Open School East includes 11 classrooms, two science labs, an art studio, administrative offices, and a range of flexible support spaces designed to adapt to evolving educational needs. The building’s design reflects a belief that environment shapes experience — and that thoughtfully crafted space can help reengage youth, build confidence, and support long-term academic success.

Recognized with the 2016 AIA Portland Merit Award, the 2018 Gray Magazine Doing Good Award, and the 2018 Contract Magazine Inspirations Award, Open School East stands as a testament to architecture’s capacity to empower youth and strengthen communities.
